‘Impressive Staging’: A World Without Death Review by Bradford Girl

By Bradford Girl

I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed this show. It was funny, I liked the costumes and make up and enjoyed the dancing (watching not joining in). I had been a little worried at the mention that the audience was involved but it was things like call and response, clapping and arm waving rather than being pulled up to the front!

I was especially pleased accessibility had been thought about and there was a BSL Interpreter, Audio Description devices and seating. The seating was all on one level so my view was a bit restricted but they will have been limited based on it being outside and I’d rather have a seat than not due to my own disability.

I was impressed with the staging and bits that I had assumed were more for show were actually used – safety harnesses are involved!

The crowd seemed like a broad mix with a variety of ages, a little kid next to me was bouncing along to all the musical moments.

As it was in Bradford Centenary Square you couldn’t avoid background noise but the sound was good enough for this to not be an issue and the performers did not seem distracted by it.

I don’t really have anything bad to say, there are some content warnings to be aware of but if you feel ok with that then I recommend going! I will definitely be keeping an eye out on future shows by Displace Yourself Theatre.

Disclaimer offered me a free ticket to the Saturday / Sunday performance in an exchange for a review. I couldn’t do those dates but I’m easily led / flattered (let me be an influencer!) so I got my own ticket for the Friday show and said I would still review.

PS my photos are rubbish but I wanted to watch the show not be distracted. There was one moment when two performers were on the roof and the lighting combined with the sky was gorgeous but getting my phone out could have meant missing something!
